Hooray Beer!

By Luke Baldwin on September 26, 2016 in Company News

What is this? At Spinutech we’re all about the relationship. We don’t just want to be your service provider; we want to be your partner. We’ll be sharing an inside look at who we are in our new blog series: “Spinside Access.” Each month we’ll bring you a new post chock full of fun and interesting details about the team, as well as useful tips and resources!

Part 1: Hooray Beer; Part 2: Music makes me...

"Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza."

- Dave Barry, Humorist and writer

Belly up and let me pour you a cold one

Full disclosure, I am not a writer. Not by any stretch of the imagination. If you’re here for thought-provoking insights or razor sharp wit, you’re about to be disappointed. What I am good at is designing effective websites and consuming beer (in moderation, of course). I’m truly fortunate to work for a company that pays me to exercise both of these passions. Or maybe they pay me for one and I just do the other. I don’t know, but I digress.

At Spinutech there are many others that share my love of a good beer. Lagers, stouts, sours, porters, wheats, ales, IPAs...we love them all. At very least, we’ll try them all. I’ve rounded up some of my fellow Spinutech beer enthusiasts to give you a taste of our palates and maybe, with the help of our recommendations, we'll expand yours.

Give me the good stuff

Ok, let's move along to the reason you're really here...the beer! A big thank you to Eric, Jeremy, Sarah, Cory, Lauren, Britt and Alan for sharing some really great information and recommendations!

First, a couple definitions to get you up to speed:

  • ABV (Alcohol by volume) - Amount of alcohol in a beer in terms of percentage volume of alcohol per volume of beer. Basically, the higher the ABV number, the higher the alcohol content. This is especially important to know if you're just stepping into the wide world of craft beers which, more often than not, have a higher ABV than traditional beers (e.g., Bud Light, Miller Light, Busch Light, etc.). If you're not careful, a good craft beer will end your party as quickly as it started it!
  • IBU (International Bitterness units) - A system of indicating the hop bitterness in finished beer. The higher the IBU number, the "hoppier" the beer. A traditional lager, for example, would typically have a very low IBU while a Triple IPA would likely have a very high IBU. It's said that the human palate, generally speaking, can't distinguish the difference between anything over 100 IBU, but you'll find plenty of beers with an IBU well over 100. One of my favorites is OV-RAL IIPA (no longer available) boasting an IBU of 408!

Q. What’s your favorite style of beer?
A. I’ve never met an IPA I didn’t enjoy...the hoppier the better!

Q. What is it about the style that you so love?
A. Probably the same thing that turns many drinkers off of them...the pronounced hop flavor. I really, REALLY enjoy the piney, citrusy taste of the hops. A great IPA should make you say “WOW!"

Q. Do you have a favorite beer?
A. Strangely enough, although my favorite style and the bulk of my consumption is IPA, I have a soft spot for Sam Adam’s original Boston Lager. Just as it was the beer that started it all for Sam Adam’s, it was also the beer that moved me from a basic “water beer" drinker to being truly adventurous with my palate. Seasonal favorite: Sam Adam's Octoberfest is a delicious and very easy-to-drink beer brewed only in late-summer and autumn.

Q. Do you have any favorite watering holes you'd like to recommend?
A. I'd be remiss not to give Singlespeed Brewing a nod as my personal favorite, with their near weekly beer releases. Uncle Harry's Five & Dime is also great for style diversity, boasting several dozen taps. Both of these bars are located on Main Street in Cedar Falls, just a stone's throw from Spinutech. Oh, I also like a good driveway or fire-pit gathering!

Q. What’s your favorite style of beer?
A. IPA or Lager - it's really hard to pick just one!

Q. What is it about the style that you so love?
A. I like the little burst of flavor that the extra hops bring. Although, there is such a thing as being too "hoppy" in my book. (My husband would beg to differ.)

Q. Do you have a favorite beer?
A. New Belgium 1554 (Black Lager). We visited the brewery a few years ago and I've been hooked ever since trying it there! Side note: it pairs perfectly with chocolate.

Q. Do you have any favorite watering holes you'd like to recommend?
A. Anywhere with a patio! El Bait Shop is up there on the list for sure, but I also like the micro-brewery vibe of Exile, Confluence and 515 in Des Moines.

Q. What’s your favorite style of beer?
A. I like dark, malty beers so I like mostly stouts and porters. Occasionally I like a fruit beer, too.

Q. What is it about the style that you so love?
A. I prefer deep flavors - I enjoy strong coffee, red wine, etc. so my flavor profile tends toward the deep sweet style of malty beers. My favorites are oatmeal and coffee stouts.

Q. Do you have a favorite beer?
A. My absolute favorite is probably the Vanilla Bean Buffalo Sweat from Tallgrass Brewing in Manhattan Kansas but since it's seasonal, you can't always get it.

Q. Do you have any favorite watering holes you'd like to recommend?
A. My absolute favorites are Surly Brewing in Minneapolis and New Glarus Brewery in Wisconsin, although locally I like to visit The Beer Hall in Waterloo and Luna in Cedar Falls.

Q. What’s your favorite style of beer?
A. American Pale Ale

Q. What is it about the style that you so love?
A. This style is hoppy but not over-the-top and is bright and refreshing. The first drink is always the best.

Q. Do you have a favorite beer?
A. Moon Man by New Glarus in Wisconsin. It's unavailable in Iowa so you have to drive to get it. That might be part of the intrigue for me.  Remember, the bottles ARE NOT redeemable in Iowa. (Thank you girl at redemption center for reminding me of this).

Q. Do you have any favorite watering holes you'd like to recommend?
A. Luke and I don't agree on everything, but we do agree on this one...SingleSpeed Brewing, just a block away from Spinutech!

Eric’s Recommendations

Q. What’s your favorite style of beer?
A. Tough question, but generally it'd be anything in the Belgian category. Not Blue Moon - but "real" Belgians - like Tripels, Dubbels, and Quads. I also really enjoy Farmhouse Ales and Saisons in the warmer months.

Q. What is it about the style that you so love?
A. Belgians have a very complex flavor profile. The are typically dense beers, with plenty of malts and spicy/fruity characteristics. They are definitely a sipping beer.

Q. Do you have a favorite beer?
A. It's really hard to pick a favorite...what I enjoy the most is variety. If I had to choose one that isn't difficult to find, I'd go with an Ommegang Three Philosophers or Goose Island Matilda.

Q. Do you have any favorite watering holes you'd like to recommend?
A. I'm a big fan of El Bait Shop in downtown Des Moines. They have lots of craft beers on tap - and it's constantly changing. I also like to visit Uncle Harry's when I'm in Cedar Falls.

Cory’s Recommendations

Beer Brewery Style ABV IBU

Q. What’s your favorite style of beer?
A. It's really hard to pick only one. I am all about the variety as you might be able to tell from my Untappd Distinct Beer count of 153 and counting. If I had to choose, I suppose a Stout or Porter would make the top of the list. Pretty much all dark beers are great.

Q. What is it about the style that you so love?
A. Creamy, hints of chocolate, coffee, or even oatmeal, fewer calories, pairs well with food, more alcohol content…how can you go wrong?!

Q. Do you have a favorite beer?
A. Split decision between Guiness Draught and SingleSpeed Brewed X2

Q. Do you have any favorite watering holes you'd like to recommend?
A. Corley Basement Tavern (of course) but a close second would be Mulligans.

Alan’s Recommendations

Q. What’s your favorite style of beer?
A. I'm mostly a cider girl these days, but I do enjoy the occasional gluten free fruit beer or golden ale (good ones are hard to come by).

Q. What is it about the style that you so love?
A. I love the combination of sweet and sour and the variety. Plus, ciders are very easy to drink.

Q. Do you have a favorite beer?
A. I've recently fallen in love with Samuel Smith's Organic Cider and New Grist Ginger.

Q. Do you have any favorite watering holes you'd like to recommend?
A. At the risk of sounding like an alcoholic, probably my patio. Unfortunately, most Cedar Valley bars don't carry gluten free beers, and the ciders are usually limited to Angry Orchard. You might also spot me roaming around Uncle Harry'sLuna, and occasionally Whiskey Road.
