"What is interesting is the power and the impact of social media...So we must try to use social media in a good way."

- Malala Yousafzai

One time in college, someone gave me a hard time for being addicted to social media. My roommate backed me up by saying, “Hey, she may have a career in social media one day!” And we all had a good laugh. That was when social media was sort of, kind of, starting to be considered as a form of marketing for businesses. Well, jokes on us, because here I am, getting paid to be on social media. Whether it’s implementing a social media strategy or reaching a highly targeted audience through social ads, I’m using social media to help my clients reach their goals. However, in my free time, I will admit that I’m on my own social media accounts A LOT.

So, whether they use it to keep up with friends and family or to follow their favorite brands, I had to ask my fellow Spinutech team members about their favorite (and least favorite) social media platforms.

Q. What is your favorite social media platform and why?
A. Instagram - I enjoy being able to see what my friends are up to in a quick snapshot, but what I really love about the platform are the beautiful photos of homes, weddings and nature from some of the accounts I follow.

Q. What are your favorite accounts to follow on that platform and why?
A. @liketoknow.it and @liketoknow.it.home - Every time I like one of their photos, I am sent an email of some or all of the items in that photo. From there, I can choose to buy the item directly from the store, except I almost never buy what’s in the photo. This is my version cart abandonment.
@ShellySarverDesigns - Local florist. She’s the best in the biz and her Instagram account proves it!
@GreenWeddingShoes - so. much. wedding. inspiration.
@Betches - Lighthearted and humorous with a side of sass.

Q. If you had to give up one social media platform that you use regularly, which one would it be and why?
A. I would say Twitter because there is so much content that I can’t keep up. It feels like I’m starting a book in the middle of chapter 4.

Q. Which old social media platform do you wish would make a comeback/what do you miss about it?
A. I feel the most nostalgia toward MySpace, but I’m perfectly content with keeping Tom and my Top 8 in 2007 where I left them. I did love Xanga, which was a writing outlet for my middle school self, but I feel like Medium has done a good job at creating a platform that allows anyone to write down their thoughts in a blog format.

Q. What is your favorite social media platform and why?
A. Twitter

Q. What are your favorite accounts to follow on that platform and why?
A. @FauxPelini - came into existence when Bo Pelini was coaching football at Nebraska (boooo). It's a parody account and the dude flat out kills it with deadpan humor.
@myrdsm - great information and humor account for all things Iowa Hawkeyes (and sports in general.) Not to mention outstanding beer recommendations!
@AthleteSwag - funny, painful, exciting moments in sports...or just anything trend-able.
@IowaAwesome - Iowa Hawkeye news and insights with a strong dose of humor and cynicism.
@HawkCentral - All thing Iowa Hawkeyes.
@david8hughes - Writer of some pretty hilariously awesome (and generally inappropriate) short stories.
@CoachMotto - Need motivation in life, sports, or other? Follow. Generally speaking, these are not overused and/or cheesy quotes. More often than not, they are thought-provoking and relatable.
@DesignerDepot - I'm a web designer...nuff said.

Q. If you had to give up one social media platform that you use regularly, which one would it be and why?
A. Snapchat. While I love it and use it daily, I use it mostly for stupidity (which, generally speaking, I'm a big fan of). Therefore, it would probably not negatively impact my life to be free of it. Or any social media for that matter.

Q. Which old social media platform do you wish would make a comeback/what do you miss about it?
A. Live, in-person, face-to-face conversations. I really miss live conversations with real human beings. I look forward to the day when we come full circle and once again form actual sounds...maybe even words...with our mouths as a form of communication.

Q. What is your favorite social media platform and why?
A.
Twitter - because I can look at only the news I have an interest in.

Q. What are your favorite accounts to follow on that platform and why?
A.
Hawkeye Sports. Because that way I get to avoid anything Cyclone related.

Q. If you had to give up one social media platform that you use regularly, which one would it be and why?
A.
Instagram. My life is boring and never posted much on it.

Q. Which old social media platform do you wish would make a comeback/what do you miss about it?
A.
I never used an old platform but I would enjoy getting free music.

Q. What is your favorite social media platform and why?
A.
Facebook. Like many things in life, you must weigh the good vs. the bad. While the bad can be annoying (politics, mostly), the good (great content from my closest family/friends) is worth it.

Q. What are your favorite accounts to follow on that platform and why?
A. Food Lovers - Des Moines - Reviews from us, the customers - It's a group for local restaurant reviews (mostly good) and pictures. Cooking is a passion of mine and I pretty much live in a state of hunger so this group is perfect. I have yet to post a review or picture but am building up the courage.
"That dude." You know the guy, always posting the most clever memes and hilarious videos. Those people play a big role in keeping Facebook what it should be - a fun tool for entertainment and keeping in touch.

Q. If you had to give up one social media platform that you use regularly, which one would it be and why?
A. Facebook. Time. I would have so many real books read by now.

Q. Which old social media platform do you wish would make a comeback/what do you miss about it?
A. AOL Instant Messenger. SweetBalla1. Glory days, they will pass you by.

Q. What is your favorite social media platform and why?
A.
Instagram - I like seeing snapshots of other people's daily lives - their work, their kids, funny things that happen to them. I also like to use it for inspiration and comic relief. I try to keep it light!

Q. What are your favorite accounts to follow on that platform and why?
A.
Obviously my friends and clients, but I also love:
@NeimanMarcus: Beautiful fashion photography and a good example of a company that really knows their brand.
@BetterHomesandGardens: Great inspiration and I love their crowd-sourcing and Insta-takeovers.
@Betches: Hilarious, even though I am not a 20-something.
@FallonTonight: He has the best writers in the business. Plus they have a different strategy for each social channel which I appreciate.
@IMomSoHard: They share my love of wine and can make light of the worst mom situations.
@JessSeinfeld: A great example of a celebrity that uses her platform for good and doesn't take herself too seriously.
@DailyPaleoMag: Keeps me motivated and gives me ideas for healthy food.
@Miller_Welders: Former client, great people, great products.

Q. If you had to give up one social media platform that you use regularly, which one would it be and why?
A.
Facebook, although I can't say I really use it regularly aside from work. I feel like too many people use it as their own personal soapbox and I hate seeing people troll on others and be mean in comments. Plus, all the #fakenews! I can hardly stand it anymore.

Q. Which old social media platform do you wish would make a comeback/what do you miss about it?
A.
That's a tough one. I appreciate the evolution of social media over the years and love the fact that different channels have begun to sort of define a generation. I remember being in high school and trying to find people we knew on AOL Instant Messenger! Then after college I remember building my MySpace page and changing the music that played when people got to it - that was cool, I miss that! I see teenagers today and they're big into Snapchat. I'm still learning that one (if you want to learn how to "Snapchat like the teens", read this article), but it's fun to see how things evolve!

Q. What is your favorite social media platform and why?
A.
Reddit, because you can find any piece of information you ever dreamed of on it. Most larger subreddits keep new topics on a constant rotation so there is something always to see out there. Probably the best part is getting lost in crazy subreddits like /r/instant_regrets, /r/PublicFreakout/, /r/pics, etc.

Q. What are your favorite accounts to follow on that platform and why?
A.
Currently, I love the drama going on between /r/politics, /r/The_Donald, and reddit themselves censoring the information. Everybody seems to work a little harder on getting good information out for both sides. Other than that I have my constants, /r/AskReddit (you can get lost in there), /r/gaming, /r/motorcycles/, /r/personalfinance (the success and failures are an amazing motivator). The beauty about reddit is there is a subreddit for everything. Checking out /r/all is always a must as well, gives you the top discussion of the day.

Q. If you had to give up one social media platform that you use regularly, which one would it be and why?
A.
Easily Facebook, I don't do much on there anymore. Secondly would be Instagram. I could never get rid of Twitter/Reddit.

Q. Which old social media platform do you wish would make a comeback/what do you miss about it?
A.
If you consider AIM part of this, definitely this. My cousins still call me by nickname sometimes, "cchuk79". Why it was that, I don't know, but it definitely stuck with them.

Q. What is your favorite social media platform and why?
A.
Instagram. I love photography and sharing moments through pictures, so Insta is the perfect place for me.

Q. What are your favorite accounts to follow on that platform and why?
A.
Enews - love my pop culture and celeb gossip, Chrissy Tiegen - she's hilarious and curbs so many Internet trolls with her humor, India Earl - her photography is gorgeous, and Esther the Wonder Pig- because she's a giant pig that lives inside a house with her family.

Q. If you had to give up one social media platform that you use regularly, which one would it be and why?
A.
Probably Facebook. I'm on Facebook pretty often because of client work, but in my personal time I sometimes find myself scrolling through a feed of negativity. While I agree that it's a place to share and discuss, there are some topics that just are not meant to be discussed behind a screen. And don't even get me started on the political debate – that's just exhausting! *disclaimer - I do, however, welcome, promote and encourage the sharing of any baby or animal or baby animal videos through Facebook*

Q. Which old social media platform do you wish would make a comeback/what do you miss about it?
A.
I'm not sure I've been alive long enough to know any that had a falling out - ha! But I am pretty bummed that Vine just died. Those short, random videos made me laugh every time I was in the app!

Q. What is your favorite social media platform and why?
A.
Pinterest. Why? Well, right now, it's because I'm planning a wedding and I don't know what brides did before Pinterest existed... but, I usually just love to peruse Pinterest for recipes and what/how to eat healthy. Also for free workouts, and to gain inspiration for a number of other things including home decor, outfits of the day (#OOTD), and super easy DIY projects.

Q. What are your favorite accounts to follow on that platform and why?
A.
Lauren Conrad, because it's Lauren Conrad. Target, Autumn Calabrese for fitness tips/recipes, Nate Berkus for interior decor inspiration, Anthropologie, Etsy - to name a few.

Q. If you had to give up one social media platform that you use regularly, which one would it be and why?
A.
Facebook due to all the dramatic political "madness" happening in the world. It's disturbing (no matter which side you fall on) and it makes me uncomfortable. :)

Q. Which old social media platform do you wish would make a comeback/what do you miss about it?
A. RateMyProfessor.com - I believe it's still around, but I obviously don't get to use it anymore with not being in school. I always picked the male professors who had the nice little chili pepper next to their name because that meant they were easy on the eyes. What a rush it was to get to the classroom on that first day of a new semester to see if that chili pepper was on point. :)
